Ploughing on despite the snow

Safety issues forced us to postpone the Leeds Sports Awards at short notice. Despite that we put on a record breaking event just 13 days later.

Record breakers

The First Direct arena again played host to the awards. With over 800 guests making it the biggest attendance in the event’s history. We were joined by local sporting royalty like Nile Wilson, Hannah Cockcroft MBE and James Simpson. The full Leeds Rhinos squad made an appearance receiving the first ever Sporting Pride of Leeds award. Rob Burrow and Danny McGuire also took to the stage to receive their special recognition awards for outstanding service to sport in Leeds.

From the start line to the finish line

Just like our winning athletes, the Leeds Sports Awards required intense preparation, practice and precision.  For the past 9 months we’ve worked tirelessly from securing sponsorship to facilitating online nominations. From ticketing services to developing strategic email and social media campaigns. From venue and guest liaison to full event planning and partner and supplier management. And then we had to organise the rearranged event in less than two weeks.

Three foundations, one memorable evening

This year we worked closely with charities from Leeds’ three major sports teams. We brought the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, the Leeds United Foundation and the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation together to highlight the fantastic work they do. A first for Leeds City. This included activities in the reception area, a feature film created by Banana Kick and a joint fundraiser that pulled in over £2,000.

A winning support team

Along with our partners at Sport Leeds, this year we were joined by LeedsBID as title sponsor for the second year running. They headed up a strong roster of supporters that also included Blacks Solicitors, ImageCo, The University of Leeds, first direct bank, Leeds Bradford Airport and Leeds City Council.

Until next year

After such a memorable event celebrating an amazing year of sport, we now set our sights on making Leeds Sports Awards 2019 bigger and better than ever. Whatever the weather.
