World Book Day 2021

For World Book Day this year, our team have shared some of their most favoured and memorable books of all time. Find out why our Head of Studio has been compared to Professor Snape and which book made our Chief Executive limit himself to reading only a certain number of pages a day to make it last.

Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding

Dev Gahir
Head of Digital

Favourite Book

Retribution Falls (Chris Wooding)… and the rest of the series!

Why?

It’s the perfect combination of sci-fi, steampunk, pirates, cowboys, romance and action. Brilliantly written, although some people said he just copies the series Firefly that was arguably ahead of it’s time. But I don’t buy into that, it’s literally un-put-down-able!

Which literary character would your friends say you are most like and why?

I’d quite like them to say Tony Stark, or Robin Hood… but it will probably be Peter Pan on account of the fact that I’m just a big kid inside this body and would have definitely stayed 9 year old if I could.

Most memorable book from your childhood

I can’t remember what it was called, but it was an encyclopaedia of “future” tech. And I used to love reading about all the stuff that would come out when I was older… and now it’s pretty much all fully here which is a bit crazy!

The Crow Road by Iain Banks

Why?

It’s dark, witty and set in Scotland, which is a beautiful country.

Which literary character would your friends say you are most like and why?

It’s Not About the Bike by Lance Armstrong

Gary McCall
Chief Executive

Favourite Book

It’s Not About the Bike by Lance Armstrong

Why?

The book tells the story of Lance Armstrong including his recovery from Cancer to becoming 7 times Tour de France Champion. I was so enthralled by the book when on holiday I used to limit myself to a certain number of pages to make it last. An incredible story before of course all the drugs accusations stripped him of the titles. Despite the disgrace of taking drugs this man was given very little chance of surviving testicular cancer so still an amazing story.

Which literary character would your friends say you are most like and why?

Roy of the Rovers because of my goal scoring prowess !!!

Most memorable book from your childhood?

Enid Blyton – Secret Seven. Great friendship amongst a group of children as they looked to solve mysteries. At an early age, these books were very exciting and tense but you could relate to the children. Wishing you were with them. A great children’s author
