Adam Emsley: My Day at Banana Kick

On Thursday 27th January 2011 Adam Emsley came to Banana Kick.

As part of his university studies Adam is currently on a placement year with Q8Oils and came to Banana Kick to learn about agency life. Here are his thoughts on the day.

“I am currently on a 12-month placement at Q8Oils one of Banana Kicks clients. To gain some experience in different areas of marketing Banana Kick kindly offered to take me in for a day and show me the working of their company. The aim was to see the differences between how an agency works compared to an in house marketing department.

One project, which we at Q8 are working on at the moment, is an internal newsletter to try and improve internal communications. After writing some of the content or this newsletter I came over to Banana Kick to see it develop.

Arriving at Banana Kick I wasn’t sure what to expect. I entered the office, which is a modern open space and instantly felt welcome. I was met by Rich who gave me a brief introduction as to what my day would include before introducing me to Ben who would be looking after me for the day.

The first item on the agenda was to meet the Head of Experiential Marketing & Sponsorship, Patrick. After being told not to believe a word he said, he began telling me a bit about what he did, despite what the others said I found this really interesting, giving an insight into the nicer ways of advertising used in experiential marketing.

After this I sat down at my allocated Mac for the day, slightly bewildered having never used one before but after a short demo I soon picked up the basics of what I needed. After reading the ‘team’ section on the Banana Kick web site I found out a bit about the people around me, this helped me to remember some names and learn a bit about all the different job roles.

Andy the head of creative then showed me how everything goes from a design brief through the 3 stages of creative and comes out as the finished item. It was good to see these processes and what goes into putting items together having only seen the initial and final stages before this. It defiantly opened my eyes to the work that goes into marketing material.

Next up was a meeting about the Q8 newsletter, between Rich, Andy, Ben and myself. This was interesting to see how the ideas and articles were translated into an actual design.

Following this meeting Ben introduced me the their web editing site where I was trusted to create some ‘recommended leisure events’ which I posted straight onto the website.

To rap up the day Rich, Andy and myself met up to discuss how the newsletter had come together and I was very impressed with what had been put together in just one afternoon, the newsletter look great and other than the content that had not yet been provided it was all set up.

All in all I had a really enjoyable and educational day at Banana Kick and would like to thank the team for being so friendly and helpful.”
