With the divvying up of the BK Olympic teams last Friday I found myself contemplating the value of a countries’ flag as a brand. What do we feel when we view these two and three colour marques that represent so much history, turmoil and hope.
The USA – bold brash and confidence, Cuba with all its rustic revolutionary connotations, and Japan with it’s quirky simplistic charm.
It led me to think about what residual affect this summer will have on our own Union Jack. Will we be able to maintain this uber britishness we are embroiled in right now or will we become saturated with the red white and blueness of it all?
I for one am pleased to see us displaying pride in our national identity, one that for too long was the property of an extreme minority! All I hope is that when the summer of sport is over, we’re not all sick to death of seeing the flag as when it is once again relegated to a supporting role on packs of sausages and a bag of spuds.
